Share Your Knowledge With Others
Wednesday, 13 October 2010 20:27

When I was in high school, I'd help people by explaining the subject at hand. While I was making B's, those that I helped would go on to get A's. It wasn't that I didn't understand the subject, I just helped someone else understand it better. I gave them a starting point to work from and improve their knowledge on the topic.

Once I entered college and started studying photography and design, I would help people new to photography to understand some of the technical aspects while I would receive assistance in understanding some of the more artistic elements. This sharing of knowledge between myself and others allowed all of us to improve.

When other people see my photography work, I am commonly asked how I took a certain photo. When I get this question, I know it is coming from someone who wants to challenge themselves to take photo or even create other kinds of art. I will take the time to educate this person without overwhelming them with them. If they are so inspired by my photo, I want to give them a good starting point to create their own.

This inspiration comes from professional photographers who attempt to do the same for people like myself. Whether they use free online articles, books or in-person workshops they do it because they have much good information that they want to share with as many people as they can. Sure, the books, DVDs and workshops can be pricey, but they tend to be well worth the purchase.

Now I have run into photographers that do not want to give any tips. That's ok, but I don't think they have any excuse if I see the same person complain about the excess of poor photography or videos available anywhere. People wouldn't ask for their help if they did not want to improve themselves.

So what I recommend is that you take 20-60 minutes from your week to explain to someone how you capture photographs. You never know when you might find an error or a flaw in your own workflow that you can improve to make even better photos. I'm looking at making our photo tips a long running feature on our blog, so if you have any questions or suggestions for future articles, please leave a comment and I guarantee that I will answer your question.
